Catholic Lawyer to Shamanic Priestess: Mellissa's Journey

In 1999, I was living a contented life as a Stanford-educated lawyer and a practicing Catholic.  Today, I’m living an ecstatic life as a practicing shamanic priestess: shaman, healer, psychic, and channel.  How did it happen? Here’s my story.

Why Get Married?

Written by Mellissa on August 5, 2008

Why get married?  We don't believe that human vows to be together "forever" can trump the will of God's destiny, and we wouldn't want to!   Why formalize what already is?  Why get the State involved in our intimate relationship?  Why give credence to a ritual that has historically manifested as an oppressively religious, economically misogynistic, blatantly consumerist manipulative way to control populations?

Even as my Beloved Richard and I asked ourselves these questions, we found ourselves moving toward a ritualized legal marriage ceremony.  Actually THREE ceremonies!  An Apache ritual in San Diego on June 7, a Community ritual at Harbin Temple on July 19, and a third to come in Richard's homeland of Germany with his family.  That's a lot of public ritual commitment for a couple who never thought they'd get married.

Why did we get Married?  Here's Why…

Bye Bye Duality!

According to most ancient wisdom traditions, the Mayan Calendar, the Native American Prophensies, and many of our trusted psychic and spiritual teachers, we are entering a New Age. We’ve been expecting it for some time, but it is finally happening. The Great Transformation is upon us. So what’s it all about?

It’s about Balance and Peace. That seems relatively well-accepted by everybody. But both of these words have an inherent assumption about them. What are we balancing? What is in conflict and therefore calling for Peace? Duality. Duality is the concept that there are two sides to every coin. Dark and Light. Male and Female. Right and Wrong. Duality gives shape and reason to our societal structures, the ones that are supposed to give us safety and comfort, easy roles to fill in our lives, and a sense of order in the Universe.

The New Priestess is Emerging

The New Priestess is Emerging.  She is a space-keeper.  She holds the nest of loving energy, inside of which her colleagues and friends may transform like a chick bursting from an egg.  She holds the container – the perfect balance of masculine protection and guidance and feminine nurturing and comfort.

The New Priestess energy is different than the old.  She does not claim full dominion over access to a supremely Feminine deity.  She is not the only way in.  She does not exist in contrast to a masculine Priest.  She has a new way of embracing the male and female as one, even as she utilizes each energy separately, as they are each beautiful reflections of the whole.

Good Choices: Discernment vs. Judgement

We make judgments about people all the time, and they are usually not helpful.  “That jerk just cut me off on the freeway!”  “That girl is rude.”  “That guy is an ignorant fool.”  We make our judgments based on rudimentary perceptions and limited experience.

Life experience has taught many of us to be careful about making judgments.  We have learned, usually the hard way, that making judgments and having expectations usually leads to disappointment at best.  Our judgments close our hearts, and our expectations put limitations on an otherwise limitless future.

But sometimes you Know that something, or someone, is not good for you.  Your gut tells you.  Your instincts tell you.  Your angels whisper in your ear.  You can feel it in your heart that this thing, this situation, this relationship – is not right for you.  Should you toss away this feeling, this Knowing, because it is a “judgment?”  Should you feel guilt for having such seemingly judgmental feelings?  No.  To do so would be to ignore your powers of Discernment, and to make meaningless the Gift of Free Choice.
